“My Strength is Not for Hurting”

These posters came from a campaign by Men of Strength, a project by California Department of Health Services and the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA). CALCASA is a statewide coalition of rape crisis centers and prevention programs founded in 1980.

Perhaps I’m so 2000-and-late, but this is the first time I stumbled upon a site that actually enlists young men to take action to stop rape. Their vision is to make the world free from sexual violence. I’m very happy it exists, and I wish there are more of them. The campaign speaks a universal language: it centers on the theme “My Strength is Not for Hurting,” and is designed to raise awareness of sexual violence among youth and highlight the vital role that young men can play in fostering healthy, safe relationships.

  1. I LOVE that they had a gay couple as well. Made me so happy. This is such an important cause.

  2. Wow! what a beautiful campaign. I love the posters! The words are really touching but I think I find the lines "so when she was too drunk to decide, I decided WE SHOULDN'T" very important for girls, super sweet. I find it more beautiful when they have gay couple for the campaign to address the LGBT community. :)

  3. Yep. I'm happy about it as a whole--it really speaks the UNIVERSAL language. Practically includes everyone: they have a white couple, a BLACK couple, an ASIAN couple, and a gay couple. :) It's a pretty amazing campaign, I hope there are more projects like CALCASA. :)

  4. Loved this campaign! This was 1 of my first modeling jobs many years ago and I was so honored to do it. My agent tried talking me out of it since it wasn't paying, but I didn't care.. The message was so important and I'm glad I was able to be apart of it!

  5. My womb is not for hurting, so when he said he didn´t want any children, I didn´t force it on him (women can stop broken families).

My womb is not for hurting, so when I knew he wasn´t the father, I let him know (women can stop ruining lifes).

My hands are not for hurting, so when my child wouldn´t stop crying, I refrained from hitting him (women can stop child abuse).

My credibility is not for getting my way, so when he wouldn´t let me smoke in his taxi cab, I didn´t accuse him of attempted rape (women can stop false rape accusations).

My strength is not for carrying out personal vendettas, so when he decided to leave me, I didn´t turn the children against him (women can stop Parental Alienation Syndrome).
